Sneem

Sneem is a charming village idyllically situated between the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range and the sea of Kenmare Bay in the southwest of Ireland. The stunning countryside offers an abundance of outdoor activities, while the village itself is full of places to visit, shop, eat, drink and relax.

Sneem village is composed of two squares, north and south, joined by a bridge over Sneem river. The village is quaint and pretty, local pride evident in the colourfully, painted houses and well-tended public areas. Sneem is a regular award-winner in the National Tidy Towns Competition, winning the top prize in 1987.

Sneem’s famous visitors include President Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, who is buried here, and former French President Charles de Gaulle. Sneem is a treasure trove of international sculpture, including a panda sculpture donated by the People’s Republic of China. “The Way the Fairies Went” is a collection of buildings designed by Kerry sculptor James Scanlon and executed by local stoneworkers on a site overlooking Sneem river by St. Michael’s Church. The project won the National Landscape Award in 1997. The legendary Casey family of rowers and wrestlers were from Sneem, with the most famous, Steve “The Crusher” Casey, undefeated heavyweight wrestling champion of the world 1938-1947, commemorated by a statue in the village.

Life in Sneem happens at a very relaxed pace and the village offers shops, cafés, restaurants and atmospheric pubs in which to browse, refresh oneself by day or while away the evening. For the more energetic, the sheltered harbour of Oysterbed Pier, The White Strand and Derrynane beaches and miles of rugged, untamed countryside are also closeby.

Wonderful memories

"After returning from Ireland we want to thank you for two lovely weeks in your country. We enjoyed our stay very much and we will tell you that the apartment in Sneem was exactly as good as we had hoped. Of course, the choice was ours and not yours, but it might be interesting for you to know that people are satisfied. Sorry to say we will hardly return to Ireland, because we are too old, but we have it and Kerry in a good memory."
